Review Glinda of Oz

Glinda of Oz, the final installment in L. Frank Baum's original Oz series, is a fascinating book that left me with a mix of emotions. While it doesn't quite have the same whimsical charm as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, it offers a compelling narrative with a darker edge than its predecessors. The plot, focused on preventing a war between the Flatheads and Skeezers, is arguably the most plot-driven of the series, creating a real sense of urgency and stakes that keep you engaged. Baum masterfully weaves together adventure, political intrigue, and the enchanting magic we've come to expect from Oz.

I particularly appreciated the depth of the supporting characters. Red Reera, the three transformed fishes, and even the Su-Dic and Coo-ee-oh, though antagonists, are richly developed and memorable. They're not just quirky caricatures; they possess genuine personalities and motivations, adding layers to the story and giving it a more mature feel. The inclusion of advanced technology, like Coo-ee-oh's magical instruments, and the sci-fi element of a powerful environmental poison adds an intriguing twist to the classic fantasy setting. This book feels less like a children's story and more like a sophisticated political thriller, albeit one set in a fantastical land.

One aspect that stood out was the palpable sense of danger. The antagonists are credible threats, devoid of the comical absurdity often found in earlier Oz books. The tension is real, making the eventual resolution all the more satisfying. However, the book isn't without its flaws. Some readers criticize its focus, suggesting it isn't truly "about" Glinda. This is a valid point; the titular character, while important, isn't the central focus in the same way Dorothy is in earlier books. Personally, I didn't find this detracting, as the overall narrative is compelling enough to stand on its own. A more significant criticism, and one I agree with, is the inconsistent use of the Magic Belt. Its immense power, seemingly capable of solving any problem, feels somewhat convenient and undercuts the narrative tension at times.

Despite this minor quibble, Glinda of Oz remains a significant work. It's a departure from the lighter tone of previous Oz books, showing Baum's ability to evolve his style and explore more complex themes. The fact that it was published posthumously adds a poignant layer; it's a fitting, if slightly melancholic, conclusion to the original series. While some might find it less charming than earlier adventures, its intricate plot, memorable characters, and surprisingly dark undertones make it a worthy read for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted fantasy story, even one tinged with a hint of bittersweetness. The Codex Collexion reprint, aiming for faithfulness to the original text and illustrations, further enhances the reading experience, offering a glimpse into a literary treasure that continues to resonate with readers today.
